Summary
In 1775 in a room above a wine shop in Paris
sits a man, who was busy making shoes. He was a prisoner in the bastille. But
now he was a free man. His name was Dr. Manette, he didn’t know that he had a
daughter.
In the other side, in England , mr. lorry a banker in
Tellson’s bank, came to tell Lucie, that her father still alive. Lucie shocked
to know about that. Then Mr. Lorry asked Lucie to went to Paris to met her
father. When Lucie and Mr. Lorry arrived
in Paris, they went to the wine shop that owned by Mr. Defarge and Madam
Defarge because Lucie’s father was there.
Mr. Lorry and Lucie
picked up Dr. Manette from that place,
moved to England, where they were trying to recover the physical of him.
Five years later, Dr. Manette and his daughter involved in
the trial of a French descent named Charles
Darnay, as a witness. Darnay accused as a
French spy. In
the trial that they
met with a lawyer
named Mr. Stryver, and his eccentric,
Sydney Carton, who
surprisingly looked alike to Charles Darnay.
Darnay eventually found not guilty by the
court.
A few years later, Lucie and Darnay got married , they lived in the
England happily.
Gabelle, the servant of the
residence Evrémonde was in the
prison, he wrote a
letter to Darnay, asking to be saved. So Darnay
went to France.
There, he was arrested because of he was
a nobleman. Darnay was acquitted, because
of Dr. Manette and
Lucie went to France, and Dr. Manette utilize its influence
so that Darnay can be free. But in the evening, Darnay
was accused again that comes from Defarge
and his wife, and
Dr. Manette!
In the trial, Defarge reads a letter written
by Dr. Manette, who expressed the
reason why he was sent to the Bastille. And Darnay will be executed
in the Guillotine.
Sydney Carton knew
about the story, and he had an idea to
free Charles Darnay. He was going to switch Charles Darnay as the prison who
will be executed. Carton do that because he didn’t want to see Lucie, the only
woman he ever loved, feel sad.
Sadly this story ends with the death
of Sydney Carton. But the good side, Charles Darnay was free and lived happily
with Lucie forever but they never forget about Carton’s big sacrifice.
2. Target
This novel is recommended for
adolescents from the age of 14 years.
3. Spelling and Language Style
The text of the story use the
vocabulary and conversational language
not really hard. So it will be easy for us to understand the story. But beside
those things, the writer insert some figure of speech so, the literary of the
story is more clearly visible and looks classic.
4. Interesting Things
Page 1
it was the best of times, it was the
worst of times. It was the season of light, it was the season of darkness. It
was the spring of hope, it was the winter of sadness. It was the year one
thousand seven hundred and seventy-five.
Page 73
Sydney Carton in the last steps to
his death said “it is a far, far better thing that I do, than I have ever done;
it is a far, far better rest that I go to, than I have ever known.”
5. Weakness Of The Book
Basically the story is in the same
type with Romeo and Juliet story, it
is end tragically and nobody knows what happens next to the cast. But actually
the story is very unique and romantic, but tragic. I bet people would say “why” during and after reading the story
because everything just end like “hanging”.
6. Excess Of The Book
It’s hard not to give a compliment to
this story because the story is really great. This story actually is a love
story, it’s about two men (Charles Darnay and Sydney Carton) who were madly in
love with one girl, Lucie mannete. But Charles Dickens made it with different
style, not like the other love story. This story was took the French revolution
as the setting. so in addition to
illustrate the love story between Lucie
Manette, Charles Darnay, and Sydney Carton, this story also illustrates
how the French Revolution was.
And beside that, the story is
equipped with beautiful-deep quotes.
7. Conclusion
And by the explanation above, this
novel is deserves to be a collection. Classic but touching. The use of simple
language makes the reader doesn’t have
to repeat reading the story. So certainly we can take the messages from the
story so we can be a better person.
